Dear Families,
My name is Cheryl Coleman, and I am the new fourth grade teacher at Queen of Peace Academy. I recently graduated from the University of Florida with a Master of Education degree in Elementary Education and was very excited when this position became available. I have created some fond ties and memories at Queen of Peace including the marriage to my husband, Kevin, and the christening of my now two-year-old son, Carter.
I am originally from New Jersey but have lived in Gainesville since 1984. I graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising in 1992 and worked retail management for 12 years before deciding I wanted a more fulfilling career. Hence, I returned to UF to earn my Master’s degree in Elementary Education.
The Master’s program is called Site-based Implementation of Teacher Education. It is a collaboration between the University of Florida and the Alachua County School Board that includes a full year internship. I interned at Lawton Chiles Elementary School. I also substituted for grades kindergarten through sixth grade at local schools, including Lawton Chiles Elementary School, Wiles Elementary, and St. Patrick’s Interparish School.
Since the completion of my Master’s degree, I successfully passed the Florida Professional Education Exam, the College Level Academic Skills Test, and the Subject Area Exam for K-6 for teacher certification. I also attended several workshops and seminars that will enhance my teaching skills including the Responsive Classroom workshop, The Florida Inclusion Network seminar, and Project CRISS training--all of which have helped me develop strategies for working with a diverse group of learners. I believe that all children are capable of learning and that they learn best through hands-on interactive activities. I also believe that along with academic skills it is important for students to learn social skills. I will do my best to create a safe and positive academic and social environment in our classroom.
I feel fortunate and proud to be a part of Queen of Peace Catholic Academy. Teaching brings with it an awesome responsibility that I take seriously. I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Coleman
